Cancer diagnosis in Oujda:
what to do in the first 48 hours?
7 clear steps for Oriental-region patients who have just received a diagnosis. No judgment, no false promises — just a framework to take back control of your pathway.
What to do concretely in the first 48 hours
1. Breathe for 24 hours before deciding
With very rare exceptions (immediate life-threatening emergency), no cancer is treated within 24 hours of the announcement. Take time to re-read the report, note your questions, and mobilise a relative to accompany you to upcoming appointments.
2. Retrieve the complete medical file
Immediately request originals: pathology report (with subtypes and markers), imaging reports + CD/USB of images, biology, the announcing doctor's letter. Without these documents, no second opinion is possible.
3. Request a second opinion
A second opinion is a right and good oncology practice. At Clinique Achark in Oujda, a second-opinion consultation is organised within 48 to 72 h on a complete file, with no commitment to subsequent care.
4. Choose a centre able to deliver the whole pathway
Prefer a centre where chemotherapy, radiation therapy, oncological surgery and imaging are accessible under one roof. This avoids image transfers, information loss between practitioners and speeds up MDT review.
5. Build the CNSS / RAMED / insurer file
Contact the centre's administrative team from the 1st consultation: CNIE, CNSS/CNOPS/RAMED card, insurer attestation, proof of address. Third-party payment is available for heavy protocols.
6. Verify MDT validation
No oncological protocol should start without being validated in a multidisciplinary consultation (MDT). At Clinique Achark, the MDT is weekly and gathers oncologist, surgeon, radiation oncologist, radiologist and pathologist.
7. Prepare daily life and support
Identify your trusted person, organise work (leave, remote work), request psychological support (often included at the clinic), contact an Oriental-region patient association.

Frequent questions after a cancer announcement
Except for life-threatening emergencies, no. A few days to retrieve the complete file, request a second opinion and have the strategy validated in MDT does not worsen prognosis and often improves the relevance of the chosen protocol.
